This blog entry is dedicated to St. Clare, as her feast day is August 11. Clare was the first Franciscan woman. She left her father's house to follow in the footsteps of Christ through the example of Francis eight centuries ago on Palm Sunday – March 18, 1212. As the bishop distributed the olive branches to the faithful during Mass, he noticed Clare. He went directly to her and personally placed the branch in her hand. He acknowledged her with a nod. Clare looked into his eyes and knew he was in agreement with her decision. That night the eighteen-year-old girl would secretly escape her home with its privileges of wealth and power to follow Francis with only one privilege – poverty. She went from her home to the Portiuncula, then to San Paolo delle Abbadesse, then to Panzo, then finally to San Damiano. After she died, her body was taken into Assisi where it rests today in the Basilica of St. Clare. I have created a slideshow of the places of Clare's pilgrimage.

The slide show on the life of St. Clare, including pictures and maps of Assisi and the surrounding areas, was like going on a "virtual trip," experiencing the past and present!

Great job, Bret. Having written a book on St. Clare (http://cfpholyangels.com/saintclare.aspx ) I can appreciate the information you shared, especially the maps and the dress as well as the background information on the saint. You did a lot of work in putting this together. Thanks for sharing it on line!

I loved the bits you shared here on St Clare!! Im eagerly trying to learn more about her, and the slide show was a great addition. I loved all of the maps on the slideshow... from just returning from Assisi, I was easily able to navigate through the streets on this maps and revisit the memories I had.

If we go through the life story of St.Clare and St. Francis we can find many things in common! Both belonged to wealthy family and they left all the fortune when Jesus called them! Thanks you so much for sharing the info!
